Why Time Is One Of The Most Important Materials In My Workshop
Thoughts on patience, craftsmanship, and why exceptional furniture can never be rushed

Why Time Is One Of The Most Important Materials In My Workshop
When people think about the materials that go into handcrafted furniture, they usually think of hardwoods.
Black Walnut.
White Oak.
Cherry.
Maple.
Ash.
Those are certainly important.
But there is another material that finds its way into every project I build.
Time.
Not because time is measured with a tape measure or purchased from a mill, but because every decision in the workshop benefits from having enough of it.
One of the greatest luxuries a craftsman can have is the ability to think carefully before making the next cut.
Sometimes that means standing back and looking at a project from across the workshop before moving forward.
Sometimes it means allowing a finish to cure properly rather than rushing to the next step.
Sometimes it means sleeping on an important design decision and returning the next morning with fresh eyes.
These moments may never be visible in the finished piece, but they often have a lasting influence on its quality.
Over more than twenty-five years of woodworking, I've learned that rushing rarely saves time in the long run.
More often, it creates compromises.
A small detail overlooked.
A design decision made too quickly.
An opportunity to improve something that passes by because the schedule became more important than the furniture.
"Time is never wasted when it is spent making something better."
At Western Pride Woodworks, I believe the furniture should come first.
Every custom project represents someone's home, their family, and often memories that have not yet been made.
That responsibility deserves patience.
It deserves careful thought.
It deserves the time required to do the work properly.
This doesn't mean a project takes longer than necessary.
It means it takes exactly as long as it needs.
I believe there is an important difference.
Customers occasionally ask how long a custom project will take.
The honest answer is that every project has its own rhythm.
Different wood species behave differently.
Different designs ask different questions.
Different pieces deserve different amounts of attention.
The calendar matters.
But the craftsmanship matters more.
If there is one lesson I've learned over the years, it is this:
Time is never wasted when it is spent making something better.
That philosophy guides every project that leaves my workshop.
Thank you for spending a few moments in it today.
