Workshop Note 004: What "Custom Built" Really Means

Workshop Note No. 004 from the workshop of Derek Lunau.

Custom furniture isn't chosen from a catalogue. It's designed around the people who will live with it for decades.

When someone tells us they want a custom piece of furniture, the first question we ask isn't about wood species.

It isn't about stain colour.

It isn't even about dimensions.

Instead, we start by learning how the furniture will be used.

Who will gather around it?

Where will it live?

What purpose will it serve every day?

That conversation shapes every decision that follows.

To us, that's what custom truly means.

Every Family Uses Furniture Differently

No two homes are exactly alike.

Some families host large holiday dinners.

Some gather around a board game table every Friday evening.

Others need furniture that fits a unique room, accommodates accessibility needs, or becomes the centerpiece of everyday life.

Because every family is different, every project begins with listening rather than building.

The furniture should adapt to the family—not the other way around.

There Is No "Standard" Board Game Table

One of the most common questions we receive is:

"What size should my board game table be?"

The honest answer is:

There isn't one.

The ideal table depends on the games you play, the number of players you host, the size of your room, and how you plan to use the table when game night is over.

For some families, a dining table that transforms into a gaming table is perfect.

Others want dedicated accessories, topper panels, cup holders, or storage designed specifically around their collection.

Every decision is made for a reason.

Design Happens Long Before Construction

Many people imagine the woodworking begins when the first board is cut.

In reality, that's only after dozens of decisions have already been made.

Dimensions.

Wood movement.

Joinery.

Grain selection.

Base proportions.

Chair clearance.

Comfort.

Finish selection.

Every one of those choices affects how the furniture will perform years from now.

Careful planning saves problems that cannot be fixed later.

Custom Means Solving Problems

Some projects require accessible topper panels.

Others require removable accessories.

Some clients need a table that fits into an unusually shaped room.

Others want hidden storage or seating for additional players.

These aren't optional upgrades.

They're solutions created specifically for one family.

That's what separates handcrafted furniture from mass production.

Every Detail Has A Purpose

A clean edge isn't just attractive.

It feels better under your hands.

A carefully shaped armrest isn't simply decorative.

It makes hours around the table more comfortable.

Even something as simple as choosing the direction of the grain influences how a finished piece looks decades later.

Good craftsmanship isn't about adding more features.

It's about making every feature intentional.

Built Around Your Life

The goal isn't to convince someone to buy the furniture we want to build.

The goal is to build the furniture they need.

That means asking questions.

Listening carefully.

Sharing ideas.

Sometimes recommending against certain choices if we believe another solution will serve the client better over the long term.

A custom project is a collaboration.

The best furniture is created together.

At Western Pride Woodworks, "custom built" means far more than choosing a wood species or changing a measurement.

It means designing every project around the people who will use it.

That process takes time.

It requires careful planning.

It demands attention to detail.

But it also creates furniture that feels like it truly belongs in the home it was built for.

That's what custom should mean.

Built From Experience

Every custom project teaches something new. No two families live exactly alike, and no two pieces of furniture should be identical. The conversations we have before construction begins often shape the finished piece just as much as the woodworking itself.
