Workshop Note No. 001: Why Craftsmanship Begins Long Before The First Cut
Workshop Note No. 001 from the workshop of Derek Lunau.
Thoughts on craftsmanship, judgment, and the philosophy behind building furniture designed to last for generations.

Workshop Note No. 001
Why Craftsmanship Begins Long Before The First Cut
When most people think about craftsmanship, they picture the moment a saw meets wood or a chisel begins shaping a joint.
For me, craftsmanship begins much earlier.
It begins with judgment.
Long before the first board is cut, hundreds of decisions have already been made. Choosing the right hardwood. Understanding how the piece will be used. Considering how it will age over the coming decades. Balancing beauty with strength. Designing something that not only looks exceptional today but continues to perform for generations.
Those decisions cannot be found in a set of plans.
They are shaped by experience.
After more than twenty-five years of woodworking, fine carpentry, and custom furniture building, I've learned that there is rarely only one way to create something beautiful. The challenge is choosing the approach that best serves the finished piece rather than simply choosing the easiest path through the workshop.
That philosophy influences every project at Western Pride Woodworks.
It guides the materials I recommend, the questions I ask, the details I pay close attention to, and sometimes the ideas I gently steer customers away from when I believe there is a better long-term solution.
I believe exceptional furniture is the result of thoughtful decisions made long before tools ever touch wood.
People occasionally ask why I don't share every step of the building process or publish progress photographs of commissioned furniture.
The answer is simple.
Every craftsman spends years developing techniques, solving problems, refining ideas, and learning through experience. Those methods become part of the craft itself.
While I'm always happy to share the thinking behind my work, explain design decisions, discuss materials, and help people understand what separates quality furniture from mass production, the techniques developed over decades remain part of the craftsmanship entrusted to me by my clients.
I also believe every commissioned project deserves a measure of privacy until it has been completed and professionally presented.
The purpose of these Workshop Notes is not to teach someone how to duplicate my work.
Their purpose is to share the philosophy behind it.
If these notes help someone better appreciate craftsmanship, understand quality, or make more informed decisions about custom furniture, then they've accomplished exactly what I hoped they would.
Thank you for stepping inside the workshop.

Let's Start With a Conversation
The best custom furniture doesn't begin with wood.
It begins with listening.
I'd love to hear about your ideas, your home, and what you hope your furniture will mean to the people who gather around it. Whether your vision is fully developed or just beginning to take shape, we'll explore it together one step at a time.
No salespeople. No pressure. No obligation.
Every project begins with a conversation not a commitment.
The easiest way to begin is by using the contact form below or sending me an email.
Most custom projects naturally start through email because it gives us both the opportunity to share inspiration, discuss ideas, and keep a written record of dimensions, sketches and important details as your project develops.
If a phone call would be helpful later in the process, I'm always happy to arrange one.
Thoughtful communication is part of good craftsmanship.
Because I'm usually in the workshop building furniture, I may not always be able to answer the phone immediately.
I carefully read and personally respond to every email, usually within one business day.
That means you'll always hear directly from the craftsman designing and building your furniture not a salesperson or office staff.
I'd be honoured to help bring your ideas to life.
