Most furniture is built to survive for a few years. Truly exceptional furniture is built to become part of someone's story for generations.

When people ask how long a custom table will last, they're usually expecting an answer measured in years.
Ten years.
Twenty years.
Maybe even fifty.
The truth is, longevity isn't measured by time alone.
I've seen furniture that was still standing after decades but had long since lost its purpose. I've also seen pieces that became more meaningful with every passing year because they remained at the centre of people's lives.
That's the difference between furniture that simply lasts and furniture that's passed down.
As a craftsman, that difference shapes every piece I build.
A Piece of Furniture Can Outlive Its First Home
One of the wonderful things about solid hardwood furniture is that it isn't tied to a single house.
Families move.
People downsize.
New homes are built.
Life changes.
A well-crafted table moves with those changes.
Sometimes it stays with the original owner for decades.
Sometimes it finds a new home with a son or daughter.
Sometimes it's cherished by nieces, nephews, close friends, or someone who simply appreciates the craftsmanship and memories connected to it.
What matters isn't who receives it.
What matters is that it continues to be valued.
Built to Be Used, Not Preserved
Some people think heirloom furniture should be protected from everyday life.
I believe the opposite.
The best tables are the ones that are actually lived around.
Board games spread across the playing surface.
Holiday dinners.
Coffee with friends.
Quiet evenings reading.
Celebrations.
Ordinary Tuesday nights.
Every scratch avoided means a memory never happened.
That's why I build furniture to be enjoyed, not hidden away.
Solid Wood Ages With Character
One of the reasons I love working with solid Canadian hardwood is that it develops character rather than simply wearing out.
Black walnut deepens in colour.
Cherry develops its rich, warm patina.
Small signs of careful use become part of the story instead of defects to hide.
A handcrafted table doesn't become less beautiful as it ages.
If it's cared for properly, it often becomes even more beautiful.
The Greatest Compliment a Craftsman Can Receive
People sometimes ask what the greatest compliment is for someone who builds furniture.
It isn't hearing that a table looks beautiful.
It isn't winning an award.
It isn't even being told the craftsmanship is exceptional.
The greatest compliment is knowing that decades from now, someone still wants that table.
Not because it's expensive.
Not because it's fashionable.
But because it has become part of their life.
Why I Build the Way I Do
Every piece that leaves my workshop represents hundreds of careful decisions.
Wood selection.
Joinery.
Finish.
Construction.
Attention to detail.
None of those decisions are made simply to help a table survive.
They're made because I want each piece to continue serving its owner long after trends have changed and other furniture has been replaced.
Good furniture can last.
Great furniture earns the privilege of being kept.
I don't know where every table I build will be fifty years from now.
Maybe it will still be in the same dining room.
Maybe it will have moved across the country.
Maybe it will be enjoyed by family members, lifelong friends, or someone who simply recognizes the value of handcrafted work.
Wherever it ends up, my hope is always the same.
That it continues to bring people together.
Because in the end, it's never really been about the table.
It's about the moments shared around it.
If a piece of furniture can help create those moments for decades to come, then I believe it's done exactly what it was built to do.
